Be prepared. Save money. Reduce stress.
2 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR MOVE
- Research moving companies
- Get quotes & compare (make sure you're comparing apples to apples!)
- Solidify your moving date
- Check availability with your preferred moving company (hint: it's MOVE INDY!)
1 MONTH BEFORE YOUR MOVE
- Book your movers & pay your refundable deposit
- Review your moving contract carefully
- Make arrangements for items not allowed on trucks (propane gas, liquids, plants, perishable food, etc.)
- Arrange for Move Day child and pet care
- Make plans for perishable food items
- Arrange for parking & elevator reservations at all stops, if applicable
- Schedule utilities for your new home to be on and transferred into your name by Move Day
- Enroll children in new school, if applicable
- Set up mail forwarding
- Submit “Change of Address” forms for important institutions and recurring payments, including banking, insurance, medical, subscription services, employers, friends, and family
2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

- Begin packing
- Purge items you don’t want to bring—the less you move, the more money you save
- Have a yard sale
- Donate items in good condition, and schedule junk removal for the rest (MOVE INDY does both!)
- Don't feel like packing, or don’t have time? Hire Move Indy to pack some or all of your belongings.
1 WEEK BEFORE YOUR MOVE
- Finish packing
- Reconfirm all details with your moving company, including…
- Did your box count change?
- Did you sell something you originally asked us to move?
- Did you discover new items you forgot to tell us about—especially heavy ones, like safes, pianos, or appliances?
- Check in with your Realtor, Lender, Title Company, and/or Leasing Agent to confirm closing is still on track
2 DAYS BEFORE YOUR MOVE
- Empty and defrost refrigerators & freezers
- Check all areas for items you forgot to pack—closets, attics, garages, basements, sheds, outdoor storage, etc,
THE DAY OF YOUR MOVE
- Confirm parking is ready for us
- Secure all pets
- Confirm elevators are reserved for us, if necessary
- Clear driveways and walkways of snow and other debris, if applicable
- Make sure an adult with decision-making ability is present
- …RELAX! You hired MOVE INDY to take care of everything for you!!
